Big news: former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is facing the Supreme Court on charges of corruption. Here’s what you need to know.
In 2014, a jury found McDonnell and his wife Maureen guilty of accepting over $175,000 worth of luxury products, loans, and vacations from Mr. Williams, a businessman peddling a diet supplement. Allegedly, McDonnell responded to those gifts by granting Mr. Williams political favors, such as arranging high-level meetings on his behalf. McDonnell argued that his behavior was not only legal but perfectly normal within our current political system.
After a federal appeals court upheld the jury’s guilty verdict, the Supreme Court agreed to hear McDonnell’s case one last time. Now our justices are wrestling with a series of tough questions: Did Bob McDonnell engage in corrupt behavior? If so, did he break the law? And, do we need to strengthen our corruption laws?
